Adopt
a Pasture
Pal
Ever
notice how two horses can become instant friends after a single
trailer ride together? And how they will call to strange
horses and want to meet those horses? Horses are gregarious,
sociable, herd animals, and enjoy the company of their own
kind. This might be obvious, but have we really given it
much thought? Have we done anything to accommodate this need
for our horses or do we do just the opposite and blame the horse
for being “stupid” or “stubborn.”.....

Don't
Breed that
Mare
Before
you decide to breed your mare please think twice. Utah
has a very real problem with horse overpopulation. Those of
us involved in the wonderful world of horses see it all too
often. The once loved children’s horse, the once brilliant
competitor, the anticipated foal that didn’t turn out exactly as
planned, the dependable riding school horse, the ‘dumb’ horse that
outsmarted his owner one too many times, the horse that received
the worse end of a divorce; all of these horses and more find
themselves homeless every day......

Horse Abuse in Utah
Does it exist, in this land of happiness and plenty? In a
state where there are more horses than in all other state but
one? Utah may not have slaughterhouses that kill
horses, but horses are being overbred, neglected, left to stand in
summer sun and winter blizzards without shelter, starved and
neglected to death in our state, and sold and resold throughout
their lifetimes. And then there are the more.......

How We Help Horses
In 2003, volunteers who recognized the plight of unwanted horses
in Utah began rescuing, rehabbing and adopting unwanted horses
from auctions, feed lots, animal-control agencies who release some
to us, and from owners who can no longer care for their horses who
turn them over to us and entrust us to care and place them in
loving, LIFETIME homes. Indeed we are one of only two rescue
organizations that help horses in Utah, a state
overpopulated.......

Pick Your Perfect Horse
What do I want to do with this horse? There is absolutely
nothing wrong with wanting a horse to be a companion and to trial
ride. In fact, 80% of riders are recreational riders; riders
that just want to be safe and have a good time with their
horses. But never say “just a trail horse”. A horse
that is dependable on the trail is priceless and not all that
common. There are many fine horses........

history as one of the greats.......

The Great Lie
“Don’t worry or cry; your pony has gone to another home, put out
to pasture,” parents tell their tearful children after they’ve
really dumped their beloved equine friend at a feed lot, to be
shipped many hot hundred miles to a slaughterhouse.
That’s what happened to this sweet......

The Joys of Fostering
Our ability to rescue and care for horses in need is limited only
by available foster homes and funding. Please consider
opening your heart and barn or pasture and foster a horse, as has
Misty Elam of Riverton. Misty has fostered two Arabians for
us and found it to be a rewarding experience! “I’m so
happy.....

Training
Wasatch Humane Horse Rescue and Adoptions started with four people
willing to rescue horses in their “spare” time. All have
full time jobs. The plan: to rescue one, rehabilitate that
one, adopt it to a good home, and find another horse in
need. Fast forward three years, and we have seven
dedicated........

Walk a Mile
Unwanted horses are often horses whose owners did not understand
or appreciate the nature of horses. Without that
understanding a bond was never formed. When there is no
bond, you’ll come up with any excuse to “get rid of the
horse”. With a little......

Who's To Blame?
Is your horse not performing to his full potential? Does he
do something that just drives you crazy? For example during
your dressage test he might stop and then take a single step
forward, or when reining will slide not quite straight.
