VOLUNTEERING WITH OUR HORSE
PROGRAM
Utah Animal Adoption Center does not have a central
facility for our horses, so our volunteer opportunities are
limited to the following: hauling hay, transporting horses to vet
appointments and foster homes; training our horses with natural
horsemanship methods, volunteering in our booth and representing
our horses at the Horse Expo and various community events.
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and have experience
working with and handling horses.
Utah Animal Adoption Center currently has 40 horses in our program
awaiting adoption, all living in volunteer foster homes.
UAAC provides or reimburses our foster homes for hay, any
supplements, all vet and farrier care. The foster home
is responsible for daily feeding, exercise, watering, and regular
brushing, gentling if you feel confident, and of course TLC.
Of course, if the foster home
ends up falling in love with their fosterling, they have the first
dibs to adopt at a reduced fee.
Because horses are such gregarious, herd animals (a necessity for
survival), we've found that people who have only one horse love to
foster for us, because it gives their single horse the
companionship they crave.
For our foster and adoptive homes, our requirements are:
safe fencing (no barbed wire to avoid preventable tragedies
we've seen too much of); basic shelter; constant access to fresh
water.
With rising hay and gasoline prices, and over-development of horse
property, there are more horses needing our help all the
time. But we can only save horses if we have available
foster homes. We do our best to match you up with a horse
that meets your expectations, level of experience, preferences
etc.
We post all our horses on our website, will screen prospective
adopters, and only refer them to you to meet the horse once we
feel it may be a good home. The foster homes have input on
the potential new home. The adoption fee for pasture pals
(horses that cannot be ridden due to age or injury) is
$300. The adoption fee for sound horses is $750.
Please complete and mail or email 1 copy each of the
volunteer
application and
foster
agreement; keep one set for your records. When we
receive the forms, we will contact you to set up an appointment to
meet you and do a facility visit. We look forward to working
with you and having your help…for the love of horses!
